What is Muscle Energy Technique (MET)?

What is Muscle Energy Technique?

Here Chris explains what is Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) and also shares how our brand new MET online course is opening up Muscle Energy Technique for therapists in a way that embeds the technique into treatments.

Muscle Energy Techniques is an essential tool for any sports massage therapist, physiotherapist, osteopath, chiropractor and anyone working with soft tissue.

Let's explore what Muscle Energy Techniques is and how it will transform your treatments; what makes it so pivotal?

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a very simple lengthening technique for muscles. In a nutshell, after you contract a muscle for a very short time the spindle and Golgi receptors have a small window where they can be lengthened. In essence it resets the nervous system's defaults for the muscle.

MET uses the energy of the muscle, in the form of isometric contractions, relaxing the muscles through autogenic or reciprocal inhibition which lengthens the muscle. This is in contrast to static stretching, a passive technique in which the therapist does all the work, MET is an active technique in which the client becomes an active participant.

So if you are in a place where your clients present with the same postural dysfunction, and treatments are relieving but not resolving, then MET could be the answer for you.

The aim of Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) is to lengthen muscles and the results are powerful. Range of movement extends with immediate effect. MET changes people's lives and is something that garners clients feedback like nothing else. Relief from acute and chronic pain and tightness can dissipate before their eyes and most importantly the results are long lasting. It brings about real tangible change for your clients.

When would you use Muscle Energy Techniques (MET)

Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) can be used for any condition in which the goal is to cause relaxation and lengthening of the muscles and improve range of motion (ROM) in joints.

  • It can be applied safely to almost any joint in the body.
  • Many athletes use MET as a preventative measure to guard against future injury of muscles and joints.
  • It is also used by individuals who have a limited ROM due to facet joint dysfunction in the neck and back, and for broader areas such as shoulder pain, scoliosis, sciatica, asymmetrical legs, hips or arms, or to treat chronic muscle pain, stiffness or injury.

What are the benefits of Muscle Energy Techniques?

  • MET reduces the strain on the therapist as the client is participating and takes very little activation force
  • MET is very good for very tender muscles, chronic inflammation, chronically tight muscles and acute injuries
  • MET reduces pain, stretches tight muscles, strengthens the weak muscles and improves circulation.
  • Improves range of motion and mobilises joint restrictions.

We offer an online training package in Muscle Energy Techniques for any Sports Therapists looking to learn these techniques for the first time or to refresh their skillset and access a library of video tutorials demonstrating Muscle Energy Techniques (MET). Click here to find out more.
